The GF word is spreading

Exciting news! Gluten free eating is in the news. It is just a short blurb, but there is a much longer report out there covering the material from the Department of Health and Human Services. This is exciting. The first steps towards reliable GF labeling on foods. Yay!

Actually, the word really seems to be getting out. I was at a workshop this past Saturday. I was picking over the snacks trying to find something safe. It struck up a conversation about dietary issues and being gluten free. One of the women asked "Oh! Do you have Celiac?" Whoa! She knew three people who had just been diagnosed. Two other women there each knew someone who has it. We are many, apparently. (Well, we already knew that. Now the rest of the world is starting to figure it out!)

Great news indeed.

I was at a Microsoft event yesterday for the launch of Office 2007, and when the snack-trays were brought out a business aquaintance asked why I wasn't having any cookies and such,... so I mentioned having Celiac. He knew immediately what it was, and mentioned how a co-workers at their company had it too. (and, he took a business card to give to them)

This is becoming the norm everywhere now - all sorts of people know about it and know someone with it. So, the word is certainly getting around, and those with the condition are emerging from the shadows. Sure, there are still many who don't know, but the ranks of the familiar are growing.

It is becoming quite "trendy" to mention gluten-free and Celiac. Looks like we are all ahead of the trend. ;-)
